Get your two-step in check.
This is not a drill.
I repeat…
This is not a drill.
My favourite band in the whole world has just released a brand new single.
But, Bronte, who is your favourite band? I hear you shouting through the screen.
Fear not, I shall keep you in suspense no longer (although, you've read the title, so I presume you already know). It's Malevolence. MLVLTD.
We’ve had a bit of a wait since Sheffield’s hardcore heroes, Malevolence, dropped their 2023 compilation The Aggression Sessions, featuring deathcore titans Fit For An Autopsy and Thy Art Is Murder. Before that, we got their 2022 album Malicious Intent, a brutal 10-track assault that left no doubt about their place in the heavy metal scene.
Malevolence are undeniably rising stars in metal - and trust me when I say, they’ve earned every bit of it. From the get-go with Reign of Suffering, they’ve been putting the “hard” into hardcore, and their new single “Trenches” is no exception.
Seriously, just hit play. This is one of those tracks that embeds itself in your brain and won’t let go. It loops around in your head, over and over, until it becomes part of your DNA, making you just that little bit more metal.
Alex’s vocals are classic Alex - raw, intense, and unmistakable - and in my opinion, they just keep getting better with every release. Then there's Kon’s contribution, which takes “Trenches” to a whole new level. His gravelly voice offers a welcome contrast to Alex’s guttural power, giving the track even more depth. As for the instruments? The guitars, bass, and drums mesh together in perfect hardcore harmony - organised chaos at its finest. It’s gritty, it’s ferocious, and it’ll have you fired up and ready to dive straight into a mosh pit.
About the track, Frontman Alex Taylor says:
"Trenches is possibly the most aggressive, ignorant, and direct song we have ever written. Over the last few years, we’ve been playing more in the commercial metal circuit at festivals and arenas, so we wanted to take this opportunity to remind people that we still haven’t lost sight of where we came from. The lyrics are a declaration of not needing validation or approval, and a rejection of those who never supported the journey but only show their face when you achieve some level of success.”
So, what are you waiting for? Turn the volume all the way up and hit play...
